Kashubia or Cassubia is an ethnocultural region in the historic Eastern Pomerania region of northern Poland. The Kashubian Strawberry, known in the local micro-language as Kaszëbskô Malëna, has a highly appreciated, specific taste – and its growing popularity has led to the dynamic development of local cultivation.
Kashubian Strawberries hail from the Elsanta, Honeoye and Senga Sengana varieties, and are distinguished by a very strong, intense, pleasant aroma and smell, as well as an above-average sweetness. This characteristic is influenced, among other things, by the specific microclimate of the Kashubian Lake District – in particular significant daily temperature fluctuations resulting from the cool nights and hot days that occur there.
The Kashubian Strawberry stands out from other Polish strawberries also because its Polish and local names have been registered as EU’s Protected Geographical Indication (PGI). This means that these names can only be used for strawberries grown by producers from the region who have a certificate or quality confirming that they have met the detailed requirements in accordance with the specification.
Rodakina Naoussas peach from the Greek region Naoussas claimed the number one spot in the World’s Top 100 Fruit ranking by TasteAtlas, while another product of this country, Chios Island’s Mandarini Chiou, ranked 3rd.
