Polish PM declares 'unquestionable’ commitment to transatlantic ties

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on Friday reaffirmed his country’s „unquestionable” commitment to transatlantic ties despite a massive shift in US policy under President Donald Trump.

Addressing lawmakers in Warsaw, Tusk said: „We are witnessing a significant shift in US policy regarding the Russia-Ukraine war.”

He was referring to Washington’s recent decision to pause military aid to Kyiv and its increasingly conciliatory stance toward Moscow.

„Every nation, including Poland, has the right and responsibility to carefully assess what aligns with its interests, security, and what may pose a challenge,” Tusk added.

However, he emphasised that „Poland’s commitment to transatlantic relations and NATO must remain unquestionable.”

Tusk told parliament that Poland’s security „is directly tied not only to the current situation on the front but also to Ukraine’s future status.”

„If Ukraine remains a fully sovereign and pro-Western state, Poland and Europe will be more secure,” he said. „If it loses the war or accepts a settlement that weakens its sovereignty, Poland’s geopolitical position will deteriorate.”

In his wide-ranging speech, Tusk announced plans to use EU funds to enhance the country’s defence capabilities.

„European funds will be directed toward strengthening defense capabilities,” he told MPs as he outlined Poland’s security and defence priorities amid geopolitical turmoil.

„We will focus on air defence, artillery, ammunition, missiles, drones, military mobility, electronic warfare, as well as AI in military applications and cyber weapons.”

Tusk was speaking in parliament after EU leaders on Thursday agreed to ramp up defence spending and reaffirmed their support for Ukraine in response to Trump’s reversal of US policies.
