The ship carrying 29 M1A1 Abrams tanks arrived in Poland’s northwestern port of Świnoujście on Saturday, and the unloading began on Monday, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
The Polish Army also received 79 so-called MRAP (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected) vehicles, the M-ATV, Deputy Defence Minister Paweł Bejda said.
In January 2023, Poland ordered 116 modernised M1A1 Abrams tanks, worth USD 1.4 billion, to be delivered by 2024.
In 2022, Poland ordered 250 state-of-the-art M1A2 Abrams tanks in a USD 4.74 billion deal, with the machines slated to reach the Polish Army between 2024 and 2026.
The deals are part of Poland’s efforts to deter Russia amid the Kremlin’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, according to officials.
