On Thursday afternoon, the European Parliament held a vote on a resolution outlining expectations for EU aid to flood victims.

Former mayor of Wrocław and MEP Bogdan Zdrojewski announced via social media that the resolution, titled „The devastating floods in Central and Eastern Europe, the loss of lives, and the EU’s preparedness to act on such disasters exacerbated by climate change,” was passed with a decisive majority.

Zdrojewski, who co-authored the document, confirmed that it was adopted „remarkably quickly and in a satisfactory version.”

The resolution includes over 20 points, seven of which are crucial for securing financial assistance for flood victims in affected areas.

The activation of EU procedures on this matter will be expedited and could happen within the next few weeks.

„There is an urgent need to activate the EU’s Civil Protection Mechanism with a full budget. This could happen in a few weeks. It is well-prepared,” Zdrojewski assured in a comment to the Polish state news agency PAP.

According to the MEP, Poland can expect significant financial support from the EU to combat the aftermath of the floods, though it is too early to specify exact amounts at this stage.

„The available funds in various programs amount to several hundred million euros, but when combined, they exceed one billion. How much we will receive remains to be seen, but I believe it will be a substantial amount. I am optimistic,” Zdrojewski stated.

On Thursday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will visit Wrocław, where she is expected to meet with Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, and Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer.
