Mateusz Morawiecki made the statement at a conference on support for Ukraine, which is being held in the Polish capital Warsaw on Monday, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

‘Europe sold its soul to Russia’: Polish PM

The PM told the audience: “Europe’s cooperation with Russia seemed cheap and efficient, until Vladimir Putin asked Europe to foot the bill. These seemingly normal contracts for the purchase of gas turned out to be a chirograph in which Europe sold its soul.”

Morawiecki noted that by invading Ukraine, Putin had “made a mistake.”

According to the PM, the Kremlin could have defeated Europe by “continuing to gradually make the continent economically dependent on Russia.”

As it turned out, “the heroic struggle of the Ukrainian nation not only saved Ukraine itself, but also shook many countries of the free world out of a geopolitical slumber,” Morawiecki stressed.

‘Hope for Ukraine is being born in Poland’: PM

The Polish PM urged: “Now is not the time for a ceasefire. Today Ukraine needs our support and hope. This hope is being born in Poland.”

Morawiecki was referring to Poland’s steadfast support for its war-torn southeastern neighbour.

He added: “This hope is a seed from which may develop an entirely new geopolitical order.”

The PM emphasised that the war in Ukraine is a test of strength for the West.

He stated: “We are facing a clear choice: either a victory for Russia and a defeat for the West, or a renaissance of Western civilization.”

The Warsaw event, called the Standing Working Conference on Support for Ukraine, is designed to review the various forms of assistance being delivered to war-torn Ukraine, according to officials.
